Continuity Statement

My commitment to users to provide data portability and a plan in case Goalie has to shut down.

Goalie is a bootstrapped solo-dev endeavour, so it’s natural that you may be sceptical about trusting me with your goals, your hopes and dreams. How can you trust my app won’t disappear in a year? Perhaps you’ve been burnt before by companies that have been acquired, shut down or simply lost their way. This is my commitment to users of Goalie that your data will never be held hostage and there will always be a clear path forward for the future of Goalie in the unlikely event that I should be unable to continue developing Goalie.

Goalie today

Goalie is an offline-first web app. This means it has been built from the ground up with offline access in mind. It also means that a full copy of your data lives on your device. Every Project, Timeline, Goal, Note and file is in your browser’s local database. This is part of what makes Goalie different to other productivity apps out there that prioritise the online experience over the local and offline one. Because you have a full copy of your data locally you can export your Goalie data at any time.

You can export in two different ways:

Full Export - You can do a full export of everything to a ZIP file in the following format:
- goalie-data.json - A complete machine-readable backup of your local Goalie database.
- Projects/ - A readable copy of your work, one Markdown file per goal, organised Project / Timeline / Goal. Sub-goals appear as nested headings inside their parent goal.
- Notes/ - A readable copy of your notes, one Markdown file each.
- Files/ - Every attachment, named [id].[extension]. The ids match the ones in goalie-data.json and in the Markdown links.
Export to PDF - You can export your Projects, Timelines, Goals and Notes to PDF (this includes any embedded images).

Having these two export options means that you can at any time choose to back up your data, and the relationships between your Projects, Timelines, Goals and Notes will be preserved.

Take an export now, before you need one. The files stay readable for as long as you keep them, and that’s a guarantee that doesn’t depend on trusting me.

What happens if I have to shut Goalie down

Offering data portability is one thing, but this only works if the user backs up their data before Goalie shuts down. Appropriate notice is a real thing that I can action. These are the things I pledge to do in the unlikely event of Goalie shutting down:

Minimum 90 days notice before Goalie shuts down
Refund pro rata to users on annual plans
Stop accepting new subscriptions
